WHAT THEY NEED

Essendon’s key talls in attack and defense are strong, leaving needs for small players in attack and defense. Despite improvement in the midfield, another outside, classy midfielder would go very close to completing the Bombers’ on-ball brigade.

COOPS’ VERDICT

Essendon focused on improvement and development in 2011 and delivered on that aim. Despite the disappointing elimination final loss to Carlton, Hird’s first season in charge as coach proved the future at the club is bright. They’ve found players in Tom Bellchambers, Stewart Crameri, the 2011 Rising Star, Dyson Heppell, and youngsters Jake Carlisle, Kyle Hardingham and Travis Colyer. The Bombers fall short defensively and leak too many goals, and that’s where they get blown away against the better sides. The challenge for 2012 is to bridge the gap between their very best and the worst.

TOMORROW: ST KILDA
