WHAT THEY NEED

The Hawks desperately need another key defender to add to the returning Stephen Gilham in 2012. Ryan Schoenmakers is still developing and Josh Gibson is at his best as the third tall defender where he can use his rebounding defensive skills to hurt the opposition. Western Bulldog Brian Lake fits the bill.

COOPS’ VERDICT

An exceptional year by Hawthorn this season, after injuries to the likes of Stephen Gilham and Jarryd Roughead damaging their spine. Their midfield is as good as any in the competition at their best, which was proven with the All-Australian form of Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis and Shaun Burgoyne. Former Roo David Hale proved a valuable acquisition given the injuries while first year draftees Paul Puopolo and Isaac Smith became seasoned regulars. Given an injury-free year and the acquisition of a key defender in 2012, the Hawks will have what’s necessary to win their first flag since 2008.
